Monte Cristo Ghost Town
Location: Mountain Loop Highway
Length: 9 miles roundtrip
Elevation: Gain/700 ft. Highest/2800 ft.
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 4 hours
If you want an easy trek, check out the old ghost town of Monte Cristo. It's worth doing once.
You get a cool history lesson on an old mining town and really get to meditate on how crazy it is that there were once thousands of people there. Who knew?
Explore, look at some gorgeous views, get a little scared from the forbidden forest. I would recommend hiking this during fall to see all the colorful foliage.
Directions:
From Granite Falls: take the Mountain Loop Hwy, once you reach the Verlot Ranger Station, drive 20 more miles and the trail is on the right, across from the Barlow Pass trailhead.
From Darrington: take the Mountain Loop Hwy (which is mostly gravel this way) 23 miles past the Darrington Ranger Station. This is an equally gorgeous drive!
Note! There have been multiple reports of theft and car vandalism in this area. Proceed with caution.

What looks like a shallow creek is actually about 6 ft. deep and very, very cold. |
Risky bridgeness. |
